Because we are not only travelers, but also au pairs. We want to share this part of our story too. We earn our money to work as an au pair and during our free time we can explore the United States!
Karlijn’s duties
I have three hostkids, they are 7, 9, and 12 years old. In the mornings I have to start at 6:30a.m. I make there lunches for school. At 7 o’clock I wake the kids and help them get ready for school. We have to get dressed, eat our breakfast and brush our teeth. At 8 o’clock I bring them to school. When it is nice weather we will bike and when it is to cold or there is snow and ice on the roads we go by car. The mornings are always the same.
When the kids are on school I have to do the laundry or groceries. After that I am off until 3 o’clock.
My 12 year old is going to middle school. She will come home by bus. I will pick up the youngest ones. Everyday is different. Sometimes I have to bring them to soccer, ballet, baseball, tennis or other activities. Sometimes we have just a day without sports and we do some activities at home, like drawing, coloring, painting, arts and crafts, playing games and a lot more!
As an au pair you have a maximum of 10 hours working a day and 45 hours in a week. So I work Monday until Friday days like I describe above. But also I have to work most times Saturday morning. In the summer I have to drive to soccer games with the kids. In the winter we just watch TV,
eat our breakfast, get dressed and do some games.
Jessy’s duties
My schedule is totally different from Karlijn I work the whole day because I have also a younger kid to take care of. I have also three hostkids of 3, 5 and 7 years old.
In the morning I start at 8am with getting the kids
ready, making breakfast, brushing teeth, combing hair and walking the oldest two kids on time to the bus stop. At 8:45 we walk to the bus stop together and the oldest two go to school. During the Day I take care of my 3 year old, we have on Monday story time, it is at the library and
there is a woman who read some books and sing songs for children between 0 and 3. A nice way to get out of the house and let my hostkid be with other children. We also bring books home from the library, but choosing books for the big kids is sometimes a challenge.
On Tuesdays we go to forest school, Forest school is not really a school. I meet every Tuesday a few moms and their kids at a park nearby. We bring some outdoor toys for the kids and let them play together and explore in the park. The kids practice their social skills and discover everything in the
forest.
During the rest of the morning and other days I like to go on a walk or ride a scooter with him on a trail or through different neighborhoods. We also go to different parks, play there and make new friends or have play dates with friends.
At home we do arts and crafts, building with legos or knex, riding our scooter, play outside, collor and do more learning activities.Around 10:30 we eat a snack, different fruit, cereal, nuts, crackers, and lots of other different snacks. Sometimes we eat a snack at the park or when we are out of the house, other times we eat just at home. Around 12:30 I make lunch for the youngest like, bagels, muffins, flat bread, pasta, mac and cheese and different kind of sandwiches.
At 2pm my youngest goes to do a nap, he sleeps between 1,5 or 3 hours. During this time I try clean up the kitchen and the dishwasher. After this I have time for myself. At 4:20 the oldest two come home from school and Deric wakes up around this time, we eat another snack and talk about their day and then it is time for homework and for reading. We have sometimes some time over to play but at 5pm I am done with working and have the evening off.
I also do once a week the laundry from the kids it is something most au pair need to do, washing the clothes, folding it and putting it in the dresser.
So I hope you guys got an impression what an au pair does as duties. We have both really different things to do as an au pair and that makes it really fun! Hope you liked it and see you guys next week
with an new blog!
